Anyone who travels a lot through Europe by car knows the problem: long queues at toll stations, the hassle of rummaging around for cash or cards and a loss of time. A toll box promises the solution here.

What is a toll box?

A toll box is a small electronic device that communicates wirelessly with toll stations. It only has to be attached once in the car, often behind the rear-view mirror, and you can then pass the stations on special lanes without stopping. This saves time, especially in the peak travel season, and ensures clear billing. Probably the biggest advantage is that you no longer have to stand in traffic in front of the barrier to pay the toll.

Different systems

The challenge, however, is that each country has its own toll system. In Italy the Telepass dominates, in France the Liber-T for cars and TIS-PL for trucks, in Spain the VIA-T and in Portugal ViaVerde. Norway uses AutoPass, Slovenia uses DarsGO, Austria uses the GO-Box for vehicles over 3.5 tons.

There are international offers for frequent travelers. The Toll1 box, for example, works in Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal as well as in selected tunnels, ferries and parking lots t online.de reports. The Bip&Go transponder covers France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, while the EETS Box UTA One even supports up to 17 toll contexts across Europe – from Belgium to Norway to Bulgaria, according to alpacacamping.de.

Costs and offers

Prices vary greatly. For France, for example, there are short-term rentals starting at 1.75 euros per day plus a five euro activation fee. Annual rents like the Liber-T are around 35 euros. The DKV model for campers covers up to ten countries and costs around 99 euros per year, plus tolls and service fees. The ADAC offers its own toll box for Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. It costs 22.90 euros per year, plus one-off activation and shipping costs. However, the current price information should be checked before ordering.
