Today on the advent calendar: “Christmas wreath day, to collect for the food bank”

December is the month of the Advent calendar par excellence, but why not one with products to collect for the food bank? At Werenfridus secondary school in Hoorn, students can bring a specific product every day. Today: Christmas wreaths.

“Teachers and students can participate voluntarily. We approached the food bank and asked what kind of products they wanted. And so we put together the calendar with some extras, a cherry wreath or chocolate,” explains Roswitha Fens, team leader at Werenfridus.

A table full of blue crates colors the entrance of the school. And wherever you look around, the Food Bank advent calendar hangs on the wall or door. A number of crates are filled in this way every day. “I brought something almost every day,” says Martijn (14), who is in third grade.

The 17-year-old classmates Koen and Jochem saw the opportunity to give their own interpretation to the whole. “On Tuesday there was a study day and there was an empty spot on the calendar, with some Christmas branches in the background. So we brought a Christmas tree to fill that day.”

Imme (13) and Katelynn (13) from the third grade, have already handed in something. “I think it’s a good action. People who don’t have that much food or money can now also have a nice Christmas.”

A large-scale action day will be held on 20 December under the name ‘Heel Werenfridus Helps’. For example, the seventh grade will go skating to raise money, money will be collected through a pub quiz and the third-year students will make their own packages for refugees and people living in poverty.

The Advent calendar campaign will run until December 16.
