The Titanic sinks again this week – but on stage in Marke. The Royal Kortrijk Lyric Theater is preparing for the premiere of the musical Titanic, a grand spectacle with singing, emotion and impressive sets.

Director Willem Dekiere emphasizes that the play is more than a disaster story. “We tell the story of real people who really existed,” he says. “The players already feel that, and I hope the audience will feel that too.”

The musical faithfully follows the historical events of 1912, when the Titanic sank during its maiden voyage. But the human stories are especially central.

“I don’t want to give spoilers, but everyone knows what happens to the Titanic,” smiles Sven Popelier, who plays one of the roles. “Certainly there will be tears shed in the second part. We hope so.”
