The title on Sunday, the big reception on Monday. The German EM champions were enthusiastically celebrated by their fans in Frankfurt at lunchtime.
Great honor for Germany’s European basketball champion: With a party in Frankfurt, the team around captain Dennis Schröder was received after returning in Germany. The players were called on the stage individually with thunderous applause, the last came Schröder with the trophy in the hand.
The captain, who is 32 years old today, was also greeted with a birthday serenade and “MVP” calls were celebrated. “This is not a matter of course for us. We respect that and celebrate it extremely. Thank you for switching on if you didn’t have directly in Riga and supported us,” said Schröder.
According to the police, around 1,000 fans and onlookers had gathered at the headquarters of a sponsor in Frankfurt, many of them with scarves and jerseys.
The DBB selection had won the final in Latvia on Sunday evening with 88:83 against Turkey and thus provided the second German European Championship title after 1993. As with Manila’s World Cup triumph two years ago, Schröder was elected as the most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament. Team colleague Franz Wagner also landed among the top five of the European Championship.
After the celebrated night in Riga, most players stepped onto the stage in Frankfurt with sunglasses over the tired eyes. Until the early hours of the morning, Schröder and Co. had celebrated the historical triumph in a luxury hotel in the old town of Riga before going to Frankfurt by charter.
1:48 p.m.: Then the official part is over. The team leaves the stage to write autographs and do selfies.
1:45 p.m.: Hesse’s Minister of Sports Diana Stolz says in the direction of the team: “I don’t even know if you are aware of what you have achieved. You wrote sports history.”
