What’s next with Timo Werner? One thing is certain: At RB Leipzig, the attacker has no future. A Bundesliga club apparently shows interest. But there is a catch.

Timo Werner has had a moving career – with successes at the highest level and equally deep setbacks. Now there could be a new chance for the striker: Borussia Mönchengladbach should be interested in an obligation. The “picture” reports.

Accordingly, the club has dealt with Werner and sees the 29-year-old as a potential reinforcement for the offensive. Sports director Roland Virkus is quoted with the words that he is looking for “versatile players” who bring “creativity and speed”. Properties that Werner regularly brought on the pitch in his best phase – not only as a goal scorer, but also as a quick winger.

However, according to the report, an obstacle stands in the way of a possible transfer: the obligation of Shuto Machino. The Japanese international comes from second division relegated Holstein Kiel to Fohlenelf and costs up to ten million euros including bonuses. He signed in Gladbach until 2029. The available budget for another attacker like Werner should have shrunk significantly.

There is also another financial hurdle. Werner is said to earn around ten million euros annually at RB Leipzig – but according to “Bild” Gladbach can offer a maximum of 3.5 million euros. It is unclear whether the 57-time international would be ready for such a large salary. Especially since Werner hopes again for a top contract in the Bundesliga or another top league.

After all, a high transfer would probably not be due. Werner is only under contract with RB for a year, the club wants to save his salary and would probably let him go free of charge.

Werner had celebrated his breakthrough at VfB Stuttgart at the age of 17. In 2016 he moved to Leipzig for 23 million euros. There he developed into a goal machine and aroused the interest of international clubs.

In 2020, FC Chelsea signed him for 53 million euros. Two years later he returned to Leipzig for 20 million – without being able to gain a foothold again. Most recently, he was awarded to Tottenham, but he did not achieve the hoped -for restart in London either. Back in Leipzig, Werner has no perspective. He is still training, but is no longer used in test games.
