“Extremely bitter”: This is what happens after the Hübers shock

Timo Hübers appears to have suffered a serious knee injury in the 1-0 defeat in Dortmund. This is how things continue for the defense chief of 1. FC Köln.
As bitter as the last-minute defeat at Borussia Dortmund was, the result became irrelevant on Saturday evening. 1. FC Cologne is worried about Timo Hübers after the 0-1 loss at Signal-Iduna-Park. “He was crying, he was in pain – he was just miserable,” reported Lukas Kwasniok about the central defender, who most likely suffered a serious knee injury against BVB.
In the 82nd minute of the game, Hübers played his last of so many duels that evening, winning it against Dortmund’s star striker Serhou Guirassy. But the Cologne ex-captain paid with his health. Hübers unfortunately stepped on the grass and twisted his right knee. He immediately fell to the ground.
The 29-year-old threw his hands in front of his face in pain. The team doctors rushed over immediately and a short time later the paramedics followed with the stretcher. Hübers had to be taken to the catacombs lying down. A great gesture: Not only the FC fans offered consolation with chants, the BVB fans also stood up and applauded.
All of this probably won’t help Hübers. “We don’t have an exact diagnosis yet, but we are assuming a serious knee injury and that we will miss him for a long time,” said sports director Thomas Kessler. Coach Kwasniok also announced: “It won’t be a six-week injury, but he will be out for months.”
A good hour after the final whistle, Hübers was loaded into an ambulance in Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, which took him to the Mediapark Clinic in Cologne, almost 100 kilometers away. “We will now take Timo with us to Cologne. Then the doctors will take a closer look,” said Kessler about the next steps. Hübers, who has already torn his cruciate ligament twice in his career, is expected to spend the night in the clinic and be examined on Sunday – then a diagnosis can also be expected.
Until then, those in charge, the fans and, of course, his teammates are keeping their fingers crossed that Hübers was lucky in misfortune. “It looked pretty bad. You saw something, so I turned around and didn’t look anymore,” Eric Martel said after the final whistle about Hübers’ right kneecap popping out. “It’s extremely bitter. First and foremost, to see a teammate like that. I’m at a loss for words,” added captain Marvin Schwäbe.
