Comedian Theo Maassen has a letter sent sent to the Volkskrant. He talks about the question of whether you can still joke about everything. “Ask a painter: can you make a painting about anything? Ask a Poet: Can You Make Poetry About Anything? It immediately becomes clear how reprehensible the question is.”

‘Yeah’

Tim Hofman states that the answer to that question is simply ‘yes’. He thinks that Theo’s complaint falls into the category ‘you can’t say anything anymore in this country!’ fall.

The presenter: “Yeah. There is no government that will fine you if you make a joke at someone’s expense: at most you will get a rebuke from the masses (also rare, it rarely goes far beyond angry tweets), and then you just sell the next night out of a room as quickly or faster.”

‘May all’

You can make all kinds of jokes, but there are consequences, explains Tim. “Sometimes people think you’re an asshole, sometimes they don’t. Sometimes you can come and tell about it in the newspaper, sometimes you can’t. Sometimes your talk show stops, sometimes it doesn’t. But it’s all possible.”

He continues: “It’s just often about decency, like not spitting in your grandmother’s face. Do you feel like making fun of someone who is already having a hard time socially or not? Well, you can’t. Or yes. Does it matter to you, that’s why you’re an edgy comedian.

‘Piss off!’

The well-known twitterer Mies then remarks: “Going with the flow is more comfortable. You know.”

Tim then jumps all the way out of his shoe. “Stop it anyway. Not pissing on someone from a marginalized group is not going with the flow. As long as my house has to be secured from time to time, I believe it’s not that bad.”

Mies: “It’s good.”

Tim: “Great.”
