Three days after his accident, Tiger Woods speaks out for the first time. The golf star announces a break – and leaves it open whether he will ever compete as a professional again.
Tiger Woods has spoken out publicly after a car accident in Florida and announced an indefinite break. In a statement published on the X platform, the 50-year-old golfer wrote that he wanted to seek treatment and focus on his health. In addition, the PGA of America announced that Woods will not lead the US team as captain at the 2027 Ryder Cup, the dpa news agency reports.
In his statement, Woods wrote that he would take the time “needed to return healthier, stronger and more focused – both personally and professionally.” At the same time, he asked for consideration for his family and himself. He did not make a declaration of resignation.
The PGA Tour rallied behind the golf star. “Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport whose influence extends far beyond his successes on the court,” said the organizers of the US tour. “Above all, Tiger is a human being and our primary focus is his health and well-being. Tiger continues to have our full support as he takes this important step.”
Regarding the Ryder Cup, the PGA said: “Tiger has informed us that he will not play as captain of the US Ryder Cup team in 2027 and we support his decision.” Who should take over the office will be announced at a later date.
Woods pleaded innocent before his statement, according to court documents reported by US media. According to consistent American media reports, he said during questioning that he briefly looked at his cell phone and changed the radio station before his SUV struck the trailer of another vehicle and his car skidded. When officers asked if he was taking any prescription medication, he reportedly replied, “I take some.”
Woods was released on bail on Friday following his arrest on drug charges. A breath alcohol test showed a value of zero. He refused a urine test. He was charged with impaired driving and refusing to take a test. According to US media, the first court hearing is scheduled for April 23rd. Woods is said to have requested not to appear in person.
