A young man on a bicycle in shorts and a jacket. A woman wrapped up in a colorful hat and gloves. And everything in between: a quick look at the street these days reveals a colorful group of differently dressed people. One is wrapped up as if it is already winter, the other clearly cannot say goodbye to summer yet.

Layers of clothing

Every year we find ourselves in such a difficult intermediate phase during the transition of the seasons. Wearing layers of clothing is the motto, says stylist Patty Zomer. “Shirt or T-shirt, a cardigan or sweater and a jacket. You tie the latter around your hips if it turns out to be too hot. This way you can peel everything off.”

According to fashion editor Kim Querfurth, September is the month to clean out your wardrobe, so there’s a good chance you’ve already done that now that it’s suddenly 18 degrees again. But don’t panic, according to Querfurth it doesn’t have to be that complicated to dress comfortably on an unexpectedly warm day. For example, long-sleeved blouses are a great option. Is it suddenly getting colder? Then you can quickly create a ‘warm look’ with a cardigan over it.

Nice and airy

A questionable case is always the jacket. Querfurth: “A trench coat is a great option for this time of year. It is a closed coat that you can also wear open and open.”

“A second option is the body warmer that you are currently wearing over a thin turtleneck or a blouse/tunic/dress with long sleeves. Still too warm? Then you can easily fold it compactly and put it in your bag.”

Querfurth also recommends the denim jacket: “A top item to wear over a blouse or a dress. The same applies to cool leather jackets. Such a leather jacket can immediately give the entire outfit something extra.”

Sick from dressing too cold?

What if, despite the clothing advice these days, you accidentally dress too cold? It does not matter what clothing you wear in confusing temperatures, says GP Stefan van Rooijen. “The fact that you catch cold more quickly if you dress coldly and grandmother’s wisdom to always wear a scarf against a cold are common tales. It’s about the strength of your immune system. In cold periods, viruses spread more easily, so you have a greater chance of catching something. With or without a coat. How sick you become depends on your immune system.”

You build up that defense by living a healthy life: sufficient exercise, healthy eating, not smoking or drinking. “It’s about your general lifestyle, you can’t dress for that. It really doesn’t hurt to walk outside without a jacket. At most, you have to make sure that you don’t cool down too much. If you’re dressed too warmly and take off your coat when you’re sweaty, you’ll cool down a little faster and get cold a little faster, but you’re not in danger right away.”
