It often happens that you have to load more than it can hold in your car. The most used solutions to solve the problem are roof racks and trolleys: both, however, have disadvantages in terms of size and air resistance. Also, not all cars are equipped with roof bars. Thus, from the Swedish Thule came an answer inspired by the motorcycle world: Arcos it is in fact a sort of top case that attaches directly to the tow hook. In this way, the aerodynamic noises typical of a roof rack and the important dimensions of a rear bogie are avoided, which moreover pays more on the motorway due to the presence of the third axle.

How it’s done

The Thule Arcos is a motorcycle-inspired trunk that attaches to the tow hook behind the car, eliminating aerodynamic resistance. There are two versions available: medium size, from 300 litres of capacity, and large size from 400. In both cases the transportable weight is 50 kg. The trunk under our test is the largest one, with a length of 171 cm, a width of 78 cm and a height of 54 cm. To mount it, it is also necessary to purchase its specific support which attaches to the tow hook and to the trunk itself using two screws. The assembly is simple: in a few minutes the whole operation can be completed, including the connection of the rear lights. To better secure closure, it is advisable to use straps outside the trunk in any case.

As it is in practical use

The Arcos top box has some undoubted structural advantages compared to a classic roof box: in addition to not increasing the aerodynamic surface of the vehicle, thus avoiding higher consumption and rustling on the highway, it is much lower, not going to negatively affect the center of gravity. Furthermore, being placed outside the car, it is excellent for transporting sports equipment and wet or dirty objects, thus avoiding damaging the interior upholstery of the passenger compartment. However, greater caution is required when maneuvering and parking because the length of the vehicle increases considerably. The price of the Thule Arcos is quite high: in fact, 1,384.90 euros are needed for the medium-sized trunk and its support, while 1,436.90 euros for the large one.

Pros and cons

Below we list the strengths and weaknesses of the Thule Arcos large size trunk.

  • The mounting position prevents wind noise, wind resistance and increased fuel consumption
  • Loading things into the trunk is comfortable thanks to the low ground clearance
  • Assembly is particularly simple and quick
  • The lock is not optimal, it is advisable to secure the trunk with the straps supplied as standard
  • It is also mandatory to buy the mounting platform, so the price goes up a lot
