Hein Oudejans is quite grumpy about it. The owner of restaurant Oudejans in the center of De Rijp has had to send his guests away several times due to power outages.

The first was on Tuesday, October 28. “That started at 8 p.m. in the evening,” says Oudejans. “Then I sent the guests home with a discount.” It wasn’t until half past ten that power was restored.

Candles on the table and cold dishes

The restaurant was hit again on Monday. “It started at 6.30 p.m. Then I immediately said: ‘Guys, we’re going to stop, because this is going to take a while’. Then I sent everyone home, because I didn’t want to wait for that. But after an hour everything worked again. You’ll see that of course.”

And yesterday at the end of the afternoon everything flew out again. “We had no power between five o’clock and seven o’clock.” Oudejans chose yesterday to remain open. “We put on candles and tried to stretch things out a bit by only serving cold dishes. But then the guests really want hot food. Some stayed, but others also left.”

Still, Oudejans managed to make it a reasonable evening yesterday. “Most tables didn’t arrive until around 7 p.m., so that worked out well.”
