The sixteen group was held by the occupiers for a few days. A French liberation attempt still failed, but on April 13, 1945, the same day that Gasselte was officially liberated, it was the Canadians who helped the Gasselters free again. Two days later the Gasseleters met in the Witte Kerkje for a thanksgiving service, a French parachutist who died in the liberation of the church was buried in the days that followed.
