The drama above Trasquera, in Val Divedro, on the border between the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Switzerland. Auguadro, 48, was bowman on Mascalzone Latino in the 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup
The three victims of the avalanche that struck above Trasquera, in Val Divedro, on the border between the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Switzerland, shared a passion for the mountains and all lived in the Verbania area. Matteo Auguadro, 48 years old, a very experienced and successful sailor, capable of reaching the America’s Cup regattas, lost his life; Gaudenzio Bonini, 65, owner of a driving school; Matteo Lomazzi, 34, border worker. They were overwhelmed by the snow mass that broke off on the eastern ridge of Punta Valgrande, while they were climbing an uphill stretch with crampons. Then, they would have to go back down on skis. Two other ski mountaineers were part of the same group, but remained unharmed: they were the first in line and were only grazed by the snow. Other people not far away who witnessed the detachment raised the alarm. Thanks to the Artva equipment the three climbers were extracted from the snow, but there was nothing that could be done. In the area of the Northern Lepontine Alps, according to ARPA, above 2100 meters above sea level the avalanche risk was level 3, i.e. “considerable”. “They were all expert guys. They were going up the canal where there was already a trace of someone having passed previously, but they were dragged downstream for over 500 metres”, explained Matteo Gasparini of the Val d’Ossola Alpine Rescue.
