Thon: No congratulations to FC Bayern

Many experts and especially fans believe after FC Bayern’s resounding victory at Eintracht Frankfurt that nobody will be able to stop Munich on the way to the next championship. But Olaf Thon, former Bundesliga professional with the German record champions and FC Schalke 04, sees it differently and urges calm.

Olaf Thon, world champion in 1990 with the DFB, understands that one or the other Bundesliga fan has already given up. “Of course, there is a great temptation to congratulate FC Bayern on the championship title after the first matchday after their 6-1 win in Frankfurt,” explained Thon in his column in “kicker”, but added: “You can do that , but I don’t want to join that.”

It remains exciting for the 56-year-old. He even tries to compete with BVB for this. “I’m still hoping for teams like Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig in the title race,” said Thon.

However, the defensive all-rounder, who laced up the football boots for FC Bayern between 1988 and 1994, is not fooling himself. Because for Thon it is clear. “It won’t be the last phenomenal performance by Munich this season. There will be more to come.”

Former Bayern coach Niko Kovac, who has to play with his VfL Wolfsburg for a guest appearance in Munich’s Allianz Arena on Matchday 2 (Sunday, 5:30 p.m.), could already feel the effects.

Thon: This trio will replace Lewandowski’s goals at Bayern

He was surprised, Thon continued, that his former club’s goal machine ran so smoothly in the first league game after Robert Lewandowski’s departure. Five different goal scorers contributed to the 6:1 success.

“I don’t think there’s anyone in Bayern this season who can match Lewandowski’s odds – if only because of rotation. But I can very well imagine that several Munich players will score double-digit points at the same time”; the 56-year-old wrote appropriately.

Thomas Müller, Serge Gnabry and newcomer Sadio Mané in particular will stand out in terms of goals and assists, Thon predicted.

In general: Mané is a “hammer transfer”. His “world class enriches the league,” said the former Bundesliga professional.

Another Bayern professional also received special praise: Jamal Musiala. “I find him breathtakingly eye-catching,” says Thon.
