On Thursday, Thomas Müller will be presented in his new club in Vancouver. The enthusiasm on site is so great that the MLS club already set up records thanks to the ex-Bavaria.
The North America adventure begins. Thomas Müller said goodbye to his home with a short video and is on his way to Canada. In the 14-second clip, which shows him when jogging through a meadow landscape, the 35-year-old announced his flight to Vancouver in English. “Last run in Germany. I’m really looking forward to the coming weeks. It’s going to be white caps,” he said with a smile.
In conversation with Sky, Müller described the situation as unusual. “The first time in a very long time that I will come to a new team. Of course I’m slightly nervous, for my conditions,” he said. The 2014 world champion changed to Bayern 25 years ago and had played 756 competitive games for the club since then. His title collection includes 13 championships, six cup victories and two Champions League successes.
The Vancouver Whitecaps from the MLS officially want to present Müller on Thursday (local time). Sports director Axel Schuster is euphoric: “This is the greatest commitment that our club has ever made – by a distance. The enthusiasm is great. All games for the rest of the season will be sold out. Our fanshop had the biggest sales day in the history of the club.” According to information from the “Sport Bild”, the Canadians achieved the highest sales ever with the sale of Müller’s jerseys-before the 35-year-old was even on the pitch for the team.
The shirts are significantly more expensive in North America than in Germany. The cheaper replica version without imprint costs the equivalent of around 118 euros. Anyone who buys the high-quality authentic variant and also selects the name and the rear number from Müller must pay up to 230 euros.
It is possible that Müller in the coveted jersey made his debut in the home game against Houston Dynamo FC on Sunday. According to Nick Salihamidžić, who played for the second team of Whitecaps in 2022, Müller can expect a lot of privacy in Vancouver. “It is precisely this anonymity that is part of the quality of life that Müller will experience here,” said the son of the former Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidžić.
Schuster also emphasized that everyday life in Vancouver is calmer that Müller could fully concentrate on football – and still a great greeting.
