Thomas Müller is now in Canada – and comes into contact with local traditions and his new fans on arrival.
Finally the time has come: Thomas Müller’s new adventure in North America has started. After his arrival in Canada at the airport, the long-time Bayern star celebrated directly with fans of his new club Vancouver Whitecaps.
Around 2 a.m. German time, Müller landed in the west coast metropolis. There he was first given a special reception. He was greeted by representatives of the indigenous Musqueam tribe with a traditional drum march and a speech by chief Wayne Sparrow.
Afterwards, the 2014 world champion wrote the first autographs for excited fans in the arrival area of the Vancouver International Airport and finally went to a sports bar on level 3, in which fans of the Whitecaps followed the semi-final first leg in the Canadian Championship against Forge FC. The winner of the competition is Canadian champion.
The 35-year-old also addressed a few short words to the fans in the sports bar. “I am happy to be here and be a whitecap,” said Müller. “We want to shape the future together. But now the game is running and we have to support.” The Canadian duel ultimately ended 2-2, but Müller had already been picked up in a dark van at that time.
A video with pictures by Müller’s arrival was posted on the official X account of the Whitecaps. “Vancouver, you made Müller feel like you were at home,” it said with a blue heart emoji.
On Thursday (6:00 p.m. CEST), the veteran who has become world -famous at FC Bayern Munich will give its first press conference since the contract signature at the Whitecaps. The next day, Müller should train with the team for the first time.
On Sunday against Houston Dynamo FC, those responsible for his new team expect Müller’s debut in the North American Major League Soccer. The MLS season has been running since February and is a league independent of the Canadian Championship.
Sports director Axel Schuster is euphoric: “This is the greatest commitment that our club has ever made – at a great distance. The enthusiasm is great. All games for the rest of the season will be sold out. Our fanshop had the biggest sales day in the history of the club.” According to information from the “Sport Bild”, the Canadians achieved the highest sales ever with the sale of Müller jerseys-before the 35-year-old was even on the pitch for the team.
Müller received a contract with the Whitecaps until the end of the coming season. His expired contract at FC Bayern Munich had not been extended.
