There are several days off during the Easter holidays, so many homes are busy cooking.
So what do Finns eat on Easter? The answer can be found in last year’s sales data of the K and S Group.
Traditionally, lamb or fish is offered at the Easter table. Last year, sales of lamb in the K group increased by as much as 857 percent at Easter time. The sale of fish, on the other hand, increased by about a quarter during the Easter week.
The S group reports that the demand for mutton increases tenfold and the sales volume of salmon and rainbow trout doubles during Easter compared to a normal week.
– The biggest season for lamb is at Easter. Then its sales will clearly increase compared to the rest of the year, says Kesko’s general merchandise manager Harri Hovi.
The S group’s sales figures also show the effect of Easter on lamb. Sales manager of the S group supermarket Juhani Haara says that lamb is a classic on the Easter table and the demand for lamb increases tenfold at Easter time. The demand for beef almost triples during Easter.
Meat familiar from everyday life
Despite this, the best-selling meat at Easter is chicken.
– Although lamb and beef are in demand during Easter, the best-selling meats during Easter week are chicken and various minced meats, as in the usual week, Haara says.
According to him, during Easter, the volume of chicken meat increases by about 10–15 percent compared to a normal week, depending on the year and the time of Easter.
According to the S group’s data, the position of broiler on Easter dinner tables has strengthened in the 2020s.
The same is confirmed by Kesko Hovi.
– So the Finns celebrate with the same raw material, which they also consume a lot in everyday life, Hovi says.
Broiler in its various forms is the most sold of all meat products throughout the year, except for Christmas. In the K group in 2025, the most sold chicken products in euro terms were fillet strips, fillet steaks and minced meat.
During Easter week 2025, chicken fillets, boneless steaks and bone-in breast, leg and thigh parts became slightly more popular than the everyday basic products strips and minced meat. Whole chickens are clearly bought more during Easter than otherwise, even though their sales are generally moderate.
Asparagus season starts
One of the sure Easter favorites is asparagus. Green asparagus is part of many people’s Easter table, and last year its sales tripled in both the K and S groups. For many, Easter means the opening of the asparagus season.
K-group’s Hovi says that during the Easter week, sales of fruits and vegetables will increase by about a fifth as a whole compared to the previous week. The colors of the season are reflected in the selections, because last Easter, for example, sales of passion fruit tripled, i.e. increased by 205 percent, and mango sales increased by a third, 33 percent.
Banana, the year-round selling king of yellow fruits, maintains its place as the best-selling fruit throughout the year, despite the seasons.
– Passion and mango are not only suitable for eating on their own, but also for many desserts. It is gratifying that the season inspires us to consume fruits and vegetables, says Hovi.
In the S group, the fruit sales volume is high throughout April.
According to Haara of the S group, Easter is clearly visible in sales compared to the weeks before it, but not in the same way for everyone. If Easter is warm, sales also emphasize grilling and camping.
Some customers focus on traditional Easter dishes such as mämmi, pasha, fish and meat, while others experience Easter above all as a season for sweets.
