Tina Turner’s final years were also a big struggle. In 2013 she suffered a stroke, and in 2016 she learned that she had serious cancer, as a result of which she died. In the meantime, her husband Erwin Bach saved her life when he donated a kidney to her.
After her conscious decision to leave the live business in 2009 (the singer celebrated 50 years on stage with one last big tour), Turner was rarely seen in public; as a result of her illness, it became difficult for her even with the greatest motivation .

In November 2019 there was another shining moment: The singer, already severely physically scarred, attended the premiere of “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical”, which became a worldwide success. She had to be supported by husband Erwin Bach and Oprah Winfrey. But she laughed her Tina smile and visibly enjoyed the recognition of her life’s work.

As a result, the musician was no longer even seen in short appearances. In March 2021, she posted on Twitter how she was watching the documentary “Tina” – although in the past she had sworn to herself that she would hardly watch any of the productions that dealt with her difficult past, especially in her violent marriage to Ike Turner , themed. But with the liberating autobiography “My Love Story,” in which she tells in detail what once made her life so oppressive, but also how she completely freed herself from it and made peace with it, she found a new approach.
A few months later, Tina Turner was inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame (for the second time, in 1989 she received this honor as part of Ike&Tina Turner) and thanked her in a video message. Her (now we know: last) touching and funny message: “If I’m still getting awards at 81, then I must have done something right.”
