The Munich team gamble against Benfica. Now the Vincent Kompany team threatens hard opponents.

FC Bayern loses the team for the first time at the club World Cup, but the second place in Group C is hardly interested in the team. “It itches me relatively little because nothing changes for us,” said voutine Thomas Müller after the 0-1 defeat against Benfica Lisbon. The German record champion is in the round of 16 anyway and you have to prepare for one way or another for an opponent, said Müller.

Only this is no longer called Chelsea, but flamengo. The Brazilian top club completed Group D as the winner and won 3-1 against the English, among other things. With a view of the tournament tree, the Bavarians are now on the probably stronger knockout-round side.

Because in the quarter-finals, the Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain, which is peppered with top stars, lurks in the quarter-finals. “Of course they are good. But we have already beaten them,” said Müller confidently. And then? The next chunk threatens in a possible semi -finals. Potential opponents are Real Madrid, Manchester City, Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund.

For comparison: If the Munich group winners had become, as mentioned before, it would have been against Chelsea. Palmeiras or Botafogo would have waited in the quarter -finals. Manchester City would have become the most demanding opponent in the game for moving into the final. However, coach Vincent Kompany confirmed: “There are no simple knockout rounds.”

Despite the supposedly difficult way to the final, Bayern trust their skills: “I know that such a knockout round is always a game with the fire. But I am convinced that we are still here for some time,” said Müller. Captain Manuel Neuer also looks “positively” ahead: “If we continue playing like in the second half (against Benfica, editor’s note), it will be a very good tournament.” Now go to the knockout round-“and these big games, we will then make them”.

The round of 16 of Bayern against Flamengo will take place next Sunday (from 10 p.m. in the T-Online Live ticker). The good news: The team around Harry Kane and Joshua Kimmich plays in the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami (Florida). Although the temperatures are high, the Munich residents have a heat battle around 40 degrees as spared in Charlotte.
