After just 153 days, Sandro Wagner’s first Bundesliga commitment is history. His contract in Augsburg was terminated and the severance payment was apparently settled quickly.

FC Augsburg and coach Sandro Wagner are going their separate ways after just 14 competitive games. As “Bild” reports, managing director Michael Ströll and sports director Benjamin Weber made the decision together with Wagner in a conversation on Monday afternoon.

Four wins, one draw and nine defeats – the record did not convince either party. It was agreed that things should not continue under these conditions.

Both sides quickly agreed to terminate the contract. In the summer, Wagner signed a contract until 2028, which is said to have contained an exit clause and secured him part of his estimated annual salary of around 1.6 million euros.

The 3-0 defeat at TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday had recently increased doubts on both sides. The club management had the feeling that Wagner was no longer fully convinced that he was the right coach for FCA. According to “Bild”, they asked him exactly this question in the group.

Since Wagner didn’t answer with a clear yes, the decision was made to separate. He received recognition for his honesty. According to the report, the sentence was said: “Humanly beyond any doubt.”

Wagner had given up his job as assistant coach of the national team before the season and decided to move to Augsburg.

Manuel Baum will take over the coaching position on an interim basis. The 46-year-old has been head of development and football innovation at FCA since the summer and is now returning to the coaching bench. It is his second term in office in Augsburg. He took over the club in December 2016 and was head coach until April 2019.
