New cars basically with high depreciation

Irrespective of the type of drive, the loss in value is considerable, especially in the case of new cars in the early days. On average, the depreciation of a new car with an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers is around 24 percent in the first year after registration alone. In the following years it is still around five to six percent per year. This is the result of a study carried out by “Focus Online” and “Bhr & Fess Forecast”. In contrast to their combustion engine counterparts, electrified vehicles come off far worse in terms of residual value and depreciation. What are the reasons for this?

Distorted overall picture

Bhr & Fess explains that residual value forecasts for electric cars and plug-in hybrids are associated with uncertainties due to government-sponsored purchase bonuses and rapid technological progress. According to the portal “electric car-News.net”, the state subsidies distort the overall picture, since the purchase or leasing of a new electrified vehicle can be cheaper than a used model due to the environmental bonus increased by 3,000 euros. This in turn pushes the purchase price of a used vehicle further down.

In addition, the residual values are further reduced by technological advances. According to the “Elektroauto-News.net” portal, which refers to Dieter Fess from Bhr & Fess Forecasts, continuous improvements in the ranges of electric vehicles are anything but conducive to the attractiveness and value of the respective predecessor version. According to the portal, it is not uncommon for ranges to almost double for new model generations. This is directly reflected in realizable sales prices.

These are the electrified residual value winners

In the electric car segment, the Skoda Enyaq iV was chosen as the residual value winner, which, according to the forecast, can still have a residual value of 50.5 percent of the list price in 2025. This reports “chip.de”. In the hybrid vehicle segment, Mercedes is in first place among the residual value giants. In four years, the Mercedes GLC 300e will still have a residual value of 54.5 percent of the new price. However, compared to conventional models with combustion engines, where residual value winners sometimes achieve values between 55 and 59 percent, the losses in value are higher. The Seat Mii electric recorded the smallest loss in value of the purely electric cars measured in euros. According to “chip.de”, the Hyundai Ioniq 1.6 GDI ranks first among the plug-in hybrids in terms of absolute value retention and has the lowest losses.
