Rudi Völler remains with the German Football Association (DFB) as Sporting Director. The 66-year-old will fulfill his contract until the European Championship 2028, even alongside a potential head coach Jürgen Klopp. Völler confirmed this on Tuesday in Frankfurt/Main.
“It would not have been a problem for me to put an end to this. However, everything here means too much to me. I enjoy doing this and will continue to help in my own way,” Völler stated in a joint interview with various media outlets such as Kicker, Funke Mediengruppe, Frankfurter Rundschau, Süddeutsche Zeitung, ARD, and Bild.
Rudi Völler’s Commitment to the DFB
Völler’s role is crucial as he looks ahead to the European Championship in 2028. His passion for German football and willingness to support the national team exemplify his dedication. He noted that his connection to the DFB and its history greatly influences his decision to continue in this position.
In a recent communication, Völler discussed his conversation with Jürgen Klopp. He expressed optimism about a potential collaboration, emphasizing that while they are still working through various hurdles, he believes it will work out well. Völler mentioned, “Klopp has deserved this position for many years; his successes speak for him.”
Potential Collaboration with Jürgen Klopp
The prospect of Klopp taking on the head coach position appears promising. According to Völler, Klopp has already contacted him, and they quickly established a rapport over a lengthy phone conversation. Völler confirmed, “I will work closely with the head coach, but it’s not finalized yet; both Klopp and the association need to overcome some obstacles.”
Oliver Mintzlaff, the managing director of Red Bull, also expressed confidence in this collaboration, saying, “Rudi, you must continue. Working with Jürgen will go smoothly; it won’t be a problem.” This endorsement further solidifies the understanding that both figures share a strong mutual respect for each other’s capabilities in football management.
Klopp’s Response to Völler’s Decision
Reflecting on the situation, Klopp stated during an interview with MagentaTV that he would not impede the progress. He emphasized the importance of having someone like Völler who understands the operational procedures within the DFB, asserting that his extensive experience would be invaluable. “I have never played or coached a national team; my experience is quite limited,” said Klopp.
A Future Focused on Success
Following the World Cup debacle and Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation, Völler faced moments of self-reflection. He questioned the purpose of continuing in his role but was met with overwhelming support from key figures within the DFB and club representatives. “They all said they wanted me to continue. It’s hard for me to say no, and I genuinely enjoy this role,” Völler explained.
As Völler prepares to guide the DFB towards future successes, the potential partnership with Klopp could usher in a new era of achievement for German football. The combined experience and passion of these two football icons may serve as the backbone for reviving Germany’s prowess on the international stage in the coming years.
