After a disappointing last season, Borussia Mönchengladbach is currently playing for European places again. A key to the upward trend in Gladbach is attacker Marcus Thuram, who is finally working again under new coach Daniel Farke.
According to “Sport Bild”, the Frenchman’s performance explosion is no coincidence. Rather, it is the result of a clear strategy on the part of the new trainer.
Right from the start, Farke tried very hard to rebuild the 25-year-old. In fact, he managed to integrate Thuram into the team after he was previously considered isolated. The fact that Farke speaks French is said to have helped.
“He is an emotional player who has to feel good and secure. And has to feel trust. In an atmosphere in which players feel valued and accepted, the performance is always better,” the sports newspaper quoted the Gladbach coach as saying.
At the same time, Farke, together with sports director Roland Virkus, showed the top performer a clear perspective, continues “Sport Bild”. While the four-time French national player under Max Eberl was practically permanently up for sale for economic reasons, the new management duo on the Lower Rhine showed a strong interest in Thuram staying.
Gladbach wants to extend Marcus Thuram
When he took office in July, Farke had already informed the offensive player that he was planning with him – even beyond the current end of the contract in June 2023.
It has long been rumored that Gladbach will extend the contract with the right foot in a similar way as recently with Jonas Hofmann and Alassane Pléa. The two star players had signed new working papers with Borussia in the summer, which probably contain exit clauses in the double-digit million range. Such a model is now also conceivable at Thuram.
The striker, meanwhile, immediately repaid the new coach’s trust on the pitch. In the first seven games of the season, he scored three goals for the Foals and provided two more assists – plus a hat-trick in the first round of the cup. In the whole of last season, he had only scored four points.
In addition, his fitness level should now be at the top level again. At least Thuram has already broken his speed record from last season.
