Jari Saario is at sea again. The man left on 11 November 2025 to row from Chile to South Africa. The length of the journey is approximately 8,000 kilometers. The trip takes an estimated 3–4 months.
Saario tells about his trip on Instagram. He is also asked a lot of questions about the trip. The most common question concerns how he handles toilet visits on the boat.
– It’s difficult to visit and operate for that too, Saario admits.
There is no need to go outside if the storm wind is blowing and the temperature hovers around zero. Then Saario stays indoors and digs out a bucket or a duck. The task is not easy.
– In stormy weather, I want to eat as little as possible so that I don’t have to go to the bathroom at all, says Saario.
However, sometimes an emptying operation must be done. After that, Saario steps out and throws the excrement into the sea, because there is simply no storage space for excrement on the boat.
– I’ve calculated that as long as I’m at sea, I’m one of the fish, and I have the right to do that, Saario says.
The 53-year-old gentleman is an experienced rower. The island has, for example, crossed the Atlantic Ocean twice already.
