While children normally go door to door during St. Martin’s Day, there has been a big parade in Edam for years. “Everyone walks with their lantern, you have an illuminated line of about 1,200 people,” says co-organizer Jan Harmsen. He looks at volunteers like Ron with admiration. She has been busy decorating the streets since last December.
He says lightly: “I don’t work anymore, I have all the time to do it. I have also done a lot of other things, not just lanterns.” She continues to talk while she shows how she makes lanterns from milk cartons.
