According to the survey, Finns still prefer brick-and-mortar optician stores as the place to buy sunglasses.

The majority of respondents use more than one pair of sunglasses. Tiina Somerpuro

The brightening spring sun increases glare and emphasizes the importance of sunglasses in eye protection.

For many, sunglasses are also a key part of self-expression and style.

According to the Use of Eyeglasses and Vision Research in Finland 2025 study, we are ready to invest in sunglasses. On average, 116 euros are spent on them.

However, there is a difference between the euros used depending on the consumer. 32 percent of respondents spent less than 50 euros on their latest sunglasses.

Men over 60 and those living in large towns and city centers spend the most money.

Several in use

53 percent of those who responded to the survey use more than one pair of sunglasses, with the average pair using two pairs of sunglasses.

– Sunglasses are not just a summer accessory. Correctly selected lenses reduce glare and improve visual comfort, for example when driving and going out. In addition, they have an important preventive effect on the health of the eyes, reminds the CEO of Nämening ja mäjäterveys Näe ry Panu Tast in the organization’s bulletin.

Don’t forget the sunglasses. In spring, the sun is often low on the horizon in Finland, which increases glare, especially when driving and going outside. ELLE LAITILA

According to the survey, Finns still prefer the brick-and-mortar store of an optician as a place to buy sunglasses, where 58 percent bought their latest sunglasses.

22 percent of respondents use prescription sunglasses.

– Finns value quality, safety and expertise. This explains why brick-and-mortar stores are also a place to buy sunglasses, says Tast.

In the optician’s shop, sunglasses can be fitted individually for the user and lenses can be selected that meet both the purpose of use and possible vision correction needs.

22 percent of those who responded to the survey say that they buy their sunglasses in department stores or bookstores, while 7 percent in foreign brick-and-mortar stores.

14 percent of respondents purchase sunglasses from an online store.

The survey was carried out on behalf of the Näemenin ja määterveys Näe ry in Taloustutkimus oy’s internet panel, and 1119 people answered it on December 9–13, 2025. The margin of error of the study for the overall results is 3.2 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level
