Third and final phase restoration of the Ghent Altarpiece has started: “We will undoubtedly make new discoveries”

The third phase of the restoration of the Ghent Altarpiece started on Tuesday in St. Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent. The remaining seven panels that still need to be restored were dismantled and taken to the Museum of Fine Arts (MSK) under police escort. The restoration is estimated to take three years, so that in 2026 the fully restored Ghent Altarpiece can be admired in its original state after almost 600 years.
