They are 690 million kilometers apart, yet Jupiter and Venus almost seem to collide this weekend | Science & Planet

From Earth it looked as if the heavenly bodies would touch each other, but that is an optical illusion. In space, Venus and Jupiter are still 690 million kilometers apart. Every year they get a little closer because of the way they revolve around the sun. That from our point of view they seem to be so close together is very exceptional.

If you missed the phenomenon last night, you will get another chance next night. It is best to get up before sunrise, between 5 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. You can spot the planets with the naked eye or with binoculars in the east against the horizon. It concerns two luminous dots that almost touch each other. Note: the celestial bodies are not equally bright. For example, Venus shines more than Jupiter.

To see the planet’s beauty, the weather maps must be favorable. According to the RMI, the coming night will be variable cloud with a chance of low clouds and fog towards the morning.

Over the past few days, the planets have moved closer and closer together. Over the next few days, they will move away from each other again. After this we have to wait seventeen years to be able to admire this phenomenon again.
