Lots of fun again at traditional bonfires on Texel: “Pure enjoyment”

It was not possible due to corona in the past two years, but today the traditional bonfires on Texel were finally lit again. And that creates a good atmosphere on the island.

The Meierblissen is traditionally lit to chase away evil spirits and to welcome spring. That is why almost every village makes its own bonfire with garden waste and wood. Texel residents do their best, because the fires are often several meters high.

In the evening the whole neighborhood comes together to light the fire. That is no different in Oudeschild this year. It is therefore a big party with beer, food and fun music. “It’s really nice that it’s there again,” says a resident of Texel.

soot

And it doesn’t just stop at good food and drinks around the fire. There is a good chance that you will go home with soot on your face. Children, as well as adults, run after each other to smear the cheeks with soot from the burnt wood. “That is also a bit of tradition,” says a resident who has been taken aback.

Not home yet

There is a strong wind, but that does not stop anyone. The fun continues after sunset. “We’ll sit down with a beer for a while,” says a young islander, “and then we’ll go home when it’s been nice.”
