Open closed tabs, change the font size, mark text: What requires many cumbersome clicks on the PC or laptop with the mouse or the mouse pad can also be implemented with a simple key combination.

Those who work a lot on the computer have probably often sweared through supposedly unsolvable technology problems. Although an IT expert is often needed to solve these problems – some things can also be remedied via simple tricks: From opening up closed tabs to simultaneous formatting of several text elements to the screenshot, there is a shortcut for almost everything, i.e. a key combination. These differ in Macs and Windows devices, but both software manufacturers have long lists with key combinations for a wide variety of purposes. The most important shortcuts are explained below.

Shortcuts for devices with Windows 10

The most famous Windows shortcuts are CTRL + C (Copy marked text), Ctrl + V (Insert the Copied Text) and Ctrl + X (Cut out the marked text, i.e. copy and delete). The key combinations Ctrl + arrow key (at the beginning of the previous or next word or paragraph) as well as Ctrl + Shift + Arrow key (mark text) are also particularly practical for text work. With Ctrl + A, the entire text is marked in a document.

But there are not only helpful shortcuts for text processing. In this way, individual windows can be maximized in the browser (Windows key + arrow button up or F11), with just one hand movement of the desktop (Windows button + D), which end active app (Alt + F4) or block the screen (Windows key + L). You can also switch between open apps without a mouse (Alt + Tab). Between the screen elements in a window or on the desktop can be switched with the F6 button, the active window updates with F5 and the menu bar in the active app does not have to be searched for long, but can be opened with F10. With the combination of Alt + arrow button to the right or left, the browser is back or stepped forward, i.e. the last page that was last opened in the tab is loaded. A new tab can be opened with Ctrl + T, and the last closed tab can be opened again with Ctrl + Shift + T.

Shortcuts for devices with MacOS

Also on the Mac, marked text can be copied with simple shortcuts (CMD + C), inserted (CMD + V) and cut out (CMD + X). With the combination CMD + Alt + Shift + V, copied text is inserted and adapted directly to the formatting of the new document, and as with Windows, the entire text can be marked with CMD + A.

The shortcut CMD + TAB changes to an display of all open windows in all active applications, and with further tab command you can switch through the displayed windows via the keyboard. Choice + CMD + H reduces the top open application and CMD + choice + ESC closes the top application. The previous command is revoked via CMD + Z – and this function can be reversed with Shift + CMD + Z. As with Windows, a new tab around browser can be opened with CMD + T and the front tab with CMD + W.

Many more shortcuts

Of course, these are not all shortcuts for a long time: Both operating systems offer routine users a whole range of other key combinations that facilitate everyday life on the computer. For example, one of the most popular shortcuts for students and researchers is the key combination Ctrl + F (Windows) or CMD + F (MacOS), with which you can search for certain keywords on one page or in a document. Both Apple and Microsoft lead publicly accessible lists on the websites of their operating systems with the common and more special shortcuts.
