The travel industry is sounding the alarm: new European sustainability rules threaten to make package holidays unaffordable or even impossible. With a package holiday, consumers book a combination of, for example, a flight, hotel and sometimes a rental car. About 2 million of these types of trips are sold in the Netherlands every year. To ensure a level playing field between providers of this type of travel, a European guideline for package holidays has existed for years. These are basic rules that national laws in all 27 Member States must comply with. The European Commission wants to adjust these existing rules to better protect consumers in particular. What does this mean for the summer holidays of the Dutch? At the same time, GL/PvdA prominent Ahmed Aboutaleb warns that significantly higher air passenger taxes will drive travelers to foreign airports en masse. Telegraaf reporter Yteke de Jong joins News of the Day to explain the consequences.
