The music streaming service Deezer has published its year in review for 2022. As in previous years, the songs and albums most frequently played worldwide and in Germany provide an overview of the tastes of Deezer users. But there is one innovation: The most streamed artists are no longer separated by gender, there is only one common category.
What is striking about the results is that German rap continues to be very popular, and local acts in general are also popular: All three national categories are led by German artists, and two of them, Kontra K and Luciano, are German rappers.
Kontra K leads the ranking of the most streamed artists in Germany, followed by Rammstein as the most popular band and singer-songwriter LEA. Pop superstar Ed Sheeran is the only international artist to feature in the top 5. Globally, Imagine Dragons and The Weeknd are at the top.
With ZEIT, Rammstein has also secured the top spot for the most popular album in Germany, and here too Helene Fischer and Kontra K follow ahead of Sheeran and Harry Styles. The international category is led by Bad Bunny and Belgian Stromae.
With “Beautiful Girl”, Luciano has secured pole position for the most streamed songs in Germany. Globally, no surprise, Harry Styles is ahead with “As It Was”. Styles only came third locally, ahead of US singer Gayle with her worldwide hit “abcdefu”, which was released in 2021.
The various annual rankings can be listened to as playlists on the Deezer channel “Rewind 2022”. In addition, the Deezer music editors want to focus more on their own “editorial picks” this year. For the best debut album, Paula Hartmann was honored with “Never in Love” as five “Artists to Watch” apart from the Berlin musicians Lie Ning and Emilio. Kim Petras, among others, was selected in the “Diverse Artist Highlights” category, which aims to promote diversity in the music industry.
