THEto therapeutic music it is not a saving promise, but an emotional territory in which many people find calm, release and presence. Between acoustic experiments, soft frequencies like the 432 Hz and careful work onconscious listeningmore and more composers are exploring the potential of sound as a tool for well-being. Among these there is Giacomo “Jack” Granatieroauthor of the method Emotional Music Therapy, that unites cinematic pianoimmersive and technical atmospheres emotional self-regulation. With him we explored what makes music a place where, sometimes, the body can finally breathe.
432 Hz as a nuance, not as a myth
Granatiero makes it clear right away: the 432 Hz is not a magic formula, it is a stylistic choice. He says it’s like preferring the sunset to neon: the light is the same, but the way we perceive it changes. From an acoustic point of view it is one slightly lower frequency than the standard 440 Hz and this produces a softer attack, less tense energy and reduced brilliance. Some psycho-acoustic research indicates that less bright sounds can attenuate the reactivity of the limbic system, promoting relaxation. For the composer, however, the point is not the number, but theemotion that that number orients. 432 Hz becomes fertile ground on which to build a soundscape that invites rest.
When atmosphere matters more than frequency
Many listeners report feeling calmer and more present when listening to songs tuned to 432 Hz, but Granatiero encourages you to look beyond the frequency. It’s the way in which music is constructed makes a difference. Airy atmospheres, sweet harmonies, slow rhythms, controlled dynamics: all choices which, as various neuro-acoustic studies suggest, help the brain to emerge from hyper-vigilance and return to a more regulated state. Therapeutic music works when it becomes an external breath, something the body can lean on effortlessly.
Between science, perception and symbol
The 432 Hz debate is full of fascinating, but often confusing, narratives. Granatiero chooses a sober approach, distinguishing three levels. The real fact is that 432 Hz is simply a different way of tuning and has no direct effect on biology. The pHowever, bodily perception can change: a softer sound activates lessamygdalareducing the feeling of threat. Finally there is the symbolic dimension, a territory in which expectation and physiological response dialogue. If we think that something will do us good, the parasympathetic system is activated. It’s not an illusion, it’s the placebo effect: measurable, powerful and an integral part of the human experience. The composer’s synthesis is simple and radical: don’t believe in the myth, believe in what you feel in your body.
When music becomes a place to return to
In his daily practice, Granatiero has observed recurring benefits among those who listen to therapeutic music continuously. There Slow, predictable music can reduce your heart rate, decrease the activity of beta waves linked to anxious thinking, promote the alpha and theta waves of meditation, facilitate sleep and release held back emotions that emerge in the form of a liberating cry. Many say that music becomes a place, a mental space to return to when everything gets too full. That’s where what he calls emotional healing begins: not because music fixes, but because it accompanies.
Listen without demanding: the most important advice
Those who want to integrate therapeutic music into their routine should start from an essential gesture: listen without expectations. There music needs freedom to work. Granatiero suggests three daily methods. The micro-breaks of a few minutes, with headphones and eyes closed, they can multiply the perception of presence. A small environmental ritual, made of low light and a comfortable posture, signals the body that it is time to lower its defenses. Finally, thetotal absence of objectives prevent listening from becoming a test to pass. The most common mistake is to transform music into a medicine or a talisman. There music does not repair, but accompanies, and sometimes this is already revolutionary.
Who is Giacomo Granatiero
Italian pianist and composer, Granatiero created the method Emotional Music Therapy, which combines kinematic plane, therapeutic frequencies, immersive sound environments and emotional self-regulation techniques. His music is used for meditation, sleep, emotional release and personal wellness journeys. You can listen to it on ko-fi.com/jackgranatiero/shop and follow him on his social profiles.
What scientific studies say about 432 Hz
Neuro-acoustics reminds us that what really modulates the nervous system is not the frequency number, but the combination of slow rhythm, stable harmonies and smooth dynamics. The frequency therefore becomes one aesthetic and sensorial choicenot a direct therapeutic mechanism.
However, personal expectation can amplify the physiological response: numerous Placebo studies show that when the body “believes” it is entering a healing context, the parasympathetic system is activated, causing a real sensation of calm.
The most prudent and honest picture is this: 432 Hz does not cure, does not modify biology independently, but can be perceived as softer and less bright, favoring more relaxing and aware listening. Science invites measurement, experience invites listening.
432 Hz is often surrounded by symbolic narratives, but the clinical studies available are still few and with small samples.
A Italian research of 2019 on healthy adults (33 participants) compared music tuned to 432 Hz and 440 Hz, observing a slight decrease in heart rate when listening to 432 Hz, without significant differences in the subjective perception of well-being.

In the 2022 a study on healthcare workers showed that during a work break, therapeutic music at 432 Hz reduced systolic blood pressure and respiratory rate more than 440 Hz. However, the authors underline that the benefit could depend on the listening context, not on the frequency itself.

A most recent job 2025conducted on cancer patients, evaluated the effect of a sound intervention with a monochord tuned to 432 Hz compared to 443 Hz. Both frequencies improved the perceived emotional state; 432 Hz showed a slightly greater impact on cardiovascular parameters, but without significant clinical changes on mood.
