PSV can look back on a great 2024. At least if you look at the matches in the Eredivisie. In the Netherlands, the people of Eindhoven are almost unbeatable, but outside the country’s borders it is less impressive. It is a small blemish on what was a top year for PSV. After six years, the Eindhoven club became champions again and that caused a big party on Stadhuisplein.
Records
PSV starts 2024 with a record. At home against Excelsior they win for the seventeenth time in a row. An equaling of the record from 1988. That record is just not broken a week later. For the first time that season, the leader drops points when they visit FC Utrecht: 1-1. Yet many records will still be broken in 2024.
PSV will continue the series in 2024 with a goal in every Premier League match. Ultimately, this series ends at 65 games. It also scored the most away goals ever in the 23/24 season: 57.
European slur
PSV remains undefeated in the Eredivisie for a long time, but the month of March will be one to quickly forget. An unnecessary elimination by Borussia Dortmund follows in the Champions League. The team from Eindhoven keep it at 1-1 at home, but lose 2-0 away. Within the entire club, this elimination is seen as a blemish on the hitherto flawless season. “That was a huge disappointment,” technical director Earnest Stewart said later in May.
In the last weekend of March, the Eindhoven team also lost their undefeated status in the Eredivisie. PSV loses 3-1 against NEC. A series of 42 unbeaten matches comes to an end. It is the longest series in club history.
Championship
Pretty soon in 2024 it will be clear that PSV will become champions. After a gala performance at Heerenveen (8-0), Eindhoven is preparing for a national festival. The title is secured at home against Sparta. A day later the team of Peter Bosz will be honored.
It’s a big party for two days in Eindhoven. During the ceremony on Monday, the municipality of Eindhoven estimates the attendance at 100,000 people. After six years, a national title can finally be celebrated again.
New beginning, same PSV
After a summer of transfers in which PSV managed to keep its selection virtually together, Peter Bosz’s team is quietly continuing where it left off. The first ten matches are all won. But the eleventh match against Ajax ends in defeat. PSV lost again at Heerenveen just before the winter break, but showed in the last match of the season that they are absolutely the best on national soil.
Feyenoord is defeated 3-0 in the Philips Stadium. PSV goes into the winter break with a six-point lead over Ajax and seems to be well on its way to a new national title.
European still not top
What will remain in 2024 is that PSV alternates high peaks with deep valleys in Europe. At home against Sporting CP, the Eindhoven team may play their best match of 2024, but they ‘only’ take one point. The low point follows in Guingamp when PSV loses to Stade Brest.
As a result, it is still highly uncertain whether PSV will reach the next round of the Champions League in 2025. It also fits in with PSV’s year. Too big for the napkin, but too small for the tablecloth.
