The xx are back in the studio and working on new music

Romy Croft is looking forward to “picking up the guitar again and embracing that sound.”

A few years have passed since The xx provided us with musical news – their current album I SEE YOU is celebrating its seventh birthday on January 13th. But the wait could soon be over. Romy Croft recently revealed in an interview that the band is back in the studio and working on new music.

“It’s very open and it feels exciting”

All three members of The xx – Romy Croft, Oliver Sim and Jamie xx – have been working on their solo careers in recent years, and now they are working together again. At least that’s what Croft reported in an interview with “NME”. The singer and guitarist seems happy to be back in the recording room with the three of them: “Yes, it’s fun, it’s something completely different to be in the studio with The xx.”

“I think Oliver and Jamie and I have all tried new things and learned a lot from different projects, and I think it’s healthy to ask yourself, ‘What have you learned? What should we do now?’ I think it’s very open and it feels exciting to start over in a way,” she continues in the interview.

Learn from and for each other

Croft also offers some insight into what to expect from their future music, sound-wise: “It’s still pretty early. I think you’ll still be able to tell it’s us. But I think we’re excited to keep going and keep it fresh.” She and the other members of the group seem to be excited about a new album project again. She concludes: “I think I’m excited to pick up the guitar again and embrace that sound, but in a new way. I think I want to develop further. I think we all want that. That’s why I wanted to do this project, to learn and especially to work with other people. To learn how they work. I wanted to go back to Oliver and Jamie and think, ‘Well, I learned these things from these other people, and we can bring this fresh energy to things’.”

It is not yet clear whether there will be a new single or a whole album soon, let alone when we can expect the news. If you want to shorten the waiting time, you can listen to the current deluxe version of their 2012 record COEXIST here:
