The Week of Drenthe: burning beech and angry farmers

Angry farmers, a burning tree, a bomb that bursts: in the Week of Drenthe we look back at these news stories and much more.

On Monday, the court ruled that 30-year-old Fidan J. from Belgium must go to prison for ten years for his role in the house robbery in Gees that killed Koert Elders. He and his partner were startled in 2016 by four men who broke into their house on June 30 and robbed them of money and jewelry. Elders was beaten so badly that he later died of his injuries.

A day later we went to the De Braak estate near Paterswolde where a monumental beech had been set on fire. Two hundred years of history almost went up in smoke, to the suspicion of Natuurmonumenten. The chance that the tree can be saved is very small. “I estimate about ten percent,” said forester Bart Zwiers. In the meantime, a few young people have reported to Natuurmonumenten who admit to having started a fire.

The Apostolic Society in Hoogeveen took action on Wednesday to help Ukrainians through the winter. Russian rocket attacks have knocked out power in parts of the country and left people without heating in their homeland. A collection was held, mainly for items that people can use to keep themselves warm, such as sleeping bags, blankets and thick coats.

Farmers from the Northern Netherlands went to the provincial house in Zwolle on Thursday to express their dissatisfaction with Overijssel PAS reporters who are in a pinch. These are farmers who, for example, were able to expand their business in the past by submitting a notification. After the judge struck a line here, the farmers need a nature permit. The province of Overijssel is now imposing penalties on farmers for the lack of a nature permit. To the dissatisfaction of the farmers and their sympathizers.

A day later, an explosive was detonated in Havelte just before noon. It was a so-called hundred-pounder. The explosive was found near the bicycle path at the old runway of the airport in Havelte.
