Reuters: energy companies told the US that there is no alternative to Russian gas for the EU

The US authorities discussed with representatives of several international energy companies contingency plans for natural gas supplies to Europe, informs Reuters citing two US officials and industry sources.

An emergency is a situation in which supplies from Russia will be disrupted as a result of a conflict between Moscow and Kiev, the agency writes.

As indicated Reuters, The European Union is heavily dependent on supplies from Russia, and possible US sanctions in connection with the de-escalation in Ukraine could interrupt them. Interruptions in supplies to Europe will exacerbate the energy crisis in the region, the material notes.

According to the agency, representatives of the US State Department asked the companies if they are able to compensate for the supply of Russian gas, if such a need arises. According to interlocutors Reuters, in response, company representatives said that global supplies are limited, and there is little fuel available to cover the volumes supplied from Russia.

In addition, the State Department was interested in whether energy companies have the opportunity to increase supplies and if they could expand exports.
