Showrunner Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese announced on Tuesday (January 2) via social media that there will be no second season of “1899”. The Netflix series about the passenger ship that becomes part of mysterious happenings on its way from London to New York started on the streaming service in November 2022.
It stars familiar faces including Andreas Pietschmann (“Dark”), Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen (“The Rain”), Aneurin Barnard (“Dunkirk”) and Emily Beecham (“Hail Ceasar”).
“Sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned them”
Two weeks ago, excerpts along with the words “The first and last time aboard the ‘Kerberos’ were posted on the series’ official Instagram page. [Name des Dampfers in der Serie]. Thanks for being there.” Since then, the fans have speculated whether the end of “1899” had been formulated.
Bo Odar and Friese have now confirmed: “It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that ‘1899’ will not be extended. We would have loved to have completed this incredible journey with a second and third season like we did with ‘Dark’. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. So life is. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget that.”
The exact reasons for the cancellation are still unclear, and Netflix itself has not yet commented on this.
The “Save ‘1899’” Petition
Since the news was confirmed, fans on Twitter and beyond have started the Save ‘1899’ petition to urge Netflix to reconsider the cancellation. Almost 14,000 people have signed so far.
