There is also a triple field, the inner ring. Whoever hits this field gets three times the number of points. In this example it would be 60 points, the maximum number of points that can be achieved in one throw.
The players take turns throwing three darts at the target. The minimum possible points are zero and the maximum is 180 if the player hits the triple 20 field three times. By the way, this is the moment when the fans in the crowd cheer and hold up their 180 signs.
There are different ways of playing and modes in darts. t-online explains the “set mode” that is common at the Darts World Cup.
Both players start with 501 points. The goal is to be the first to have zero points. So every hit deducts points. For example, if player A throws the triple 20 with his first throw, then a normal 17 and finally the “Bull’s Eye”, it would be 127 points (60+17+50). Of the 501 points, 374 would still remain (501-127).
Important: The players must throw themselves exactly at zero. If you score too many points, you have to try again. Example: Player A is still eight points short. He scores ten points, two too many. In his next round he has eight points again.
Also important: professional darts play with “double-out”. This means that the last hit must be a double field. Example: If four points are missing, the game must be ended with a double deuce (see picture below). A simple four would end the attempt.
