The revolution for women’s rights is the only one that has succeeded

AND It was a thrill to meet students and teachers in the great hall of the Sapienza University of Rome, a university with 130,000 students, to speak the day after 8 March, in front of the director of iO Woman Danda Santini and to the deputy director of the Corriere della Sera Barbara Stefanelli.

Someone criticizes me for claiming that women’s rights must be looked after by women. In the twenty years of this dialogue with male and female readers, I think I have learned that on the contrary it is men who have to deal with these rights, obviously together with women. Which are not acquired forever, they must be transmitted and consolidated at each generational passage.

Compared to last year, we now have a woman prime minister and a woman head of the historic left party. It’s not a trivial step. Elly Schlein also won because she placed herself in open contradiction with Giorgia Meloni. The Italians will choose.

However, it is important to remember that all the revolutions of the twentieth century – the communist ones, the fascist ones, but also the hyperliberal one – have failed. All but one. The only one that has been successful is the women’s revolution.

Until 1919, our great-grandmothers did not have legal capacitythey could not sell a house or buy a tractor without the signature of their husband or father, i.e. they could not be autonomous and do business; things changed because there had been the Great War, and Italy would never have won it without the Italians.

Until 1946 our grandmothers could not vote; things changed because there had been the Resistance, and the Italian women made a great contribution to the reconquest of freedom and democracy. Women could not be magistrates; today the majority of young magistrates are women. And the rector of Sapienza is a woman.
