The former striker, already a famous and appreciated commentator, will curate a special edition during the next World Cup, together with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards. The involvement of a series of guest stars is also expected
Gary Lineker’s latest goal is worth 16 million euros. It is the amount that Netflix, according to the Times, will pay to the former striker’s company, Goalhanger, to have the podcast “The Rest is Football” on its platform during the World Cup, which the former striker hosts with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards. The special edition of the podcast will be filmed in a studio in New York City and in addition to the three hosts will host a series of guest stars which is expected to include some of the biggest names in the world of football.
SUCCESS
—
Lineker, who last May left the BBC where he was the highest paid employee (1.54 million euros a year to host Match of the Day, the flagship football broadcast), founded his own podcast company in 2019 and profits exploded to 3.54 million in 2024. Much of the success is based on “The Rest Is Football”, a podcast which with over 7 million streams per month has become one of the most popular in the world of football. For its World edition, Lineker’s podcast will also feature match analysis and interviews, updates from England’s training camp and from dedicated reporters across fan zones across the US, Mexico and Canada. Lineker remains one of the most popular commentators on English football. And he is ready for the next step: turning his podcast into a worldwide success. One that, according to Netflix, is worth 16 million euros.
