The video for the song “Californication” by legendary California funk rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers has now been viewed more than a billion times on YouTube. It joins the so-called “Billion View Club”, which more than 300 other music videos have already made it into.
“Californication” originally appeared on the Peppers’ 1999 album of the same name. The song was released as the fourth single in the summer of 2000 after “Scar Tissue”, “Around The World” and “Otherside”. In the accompanying music video, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, we saw the band members as avatars of themselves in a video game. Partially (and without music) this game can be played here.
The clip was finally uploaded to YouTube on October 27th, 2009, 13 years ago.
On the front seats of the “Billion View Club” include Luis Fonsi, Ed Sheeran, Wiz Khalifa and a few children’s songs.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers released two albums in 2022 with the support of their returning guitarist John Frusciante: UNLIMITED LOVE was released in spring and RETURN OF THE DREAM CANTEEN in autumn.
