Things are slowly becoming uncomfortable for Thomas Tuchel in the coaching bench after the defeat in the premier class. The record in the knockout phases also speaks against him.

Until Wednesday evening, the German record champions had marched through the Champions League without a defeat this season. However, the performance against Lazio Rome was not enough for a win (0-1). Thomas Tuchel was asked questions about his future at the press conference after the game. Like Bayern boss Jan-Christian Dreesen, he emphasized that the second leg of the round of 16 in Munich on March 5th (from 9 p.m. in the t-online live ticker) was still pending. But: The statistics in knockout games do not speak for Tuchel.

But one after anonther. Tuchel has been on the sidelines for FC Bayern three times in the DFB Cup. Last season, SC Freiburg beat Munich (2-1) in the quarterfinals. It was Tuchel’s first cup game for the German record champions and meant they were eliminated from the competition. This season there was a win against Preußen Münster (4:0) in the first round, but then a defeat against Saarbrücken (1:2).

Four defeats in six games

Tuchel has had to prove himself three times with FC Bayern in the Champions League. In the 2022/23 season he suffered a 3-0 defeat at Manchester City in the quarter-finals. The second leg in Munich ended with a 1-1 draw and elimination from the premier class. In the current season, Tuchel suffered a defeat against Lazio (0-1) in the first leg of the round of 16 on Wednesday evening.

This means: In six games in a knockout phase, Tuchel has only been able to win once with FC Bayern. One game ended in a draw and the coach and his team left the field as losers four times.
