The fuss about the matrix (ranking list with the distribution of Olympic tickets) seems a lot more intense than four years ago, Snel agrees. “It was perhaps considered more normal at the time that two people were pushed aside. The KNSB thought the team pursuit was much more important. Several people have now spoken out, so it is also magnified.”
Snel also notices that there is more attention for the sport of skating in the number of reactions after his ticket for the Games. “I have really received a lot of responses, also from people you know from the past and have not spoken to for a long time. That is really nice to see and makes me feel good. I have the feeling that the OKT has also been followed by many people, that is a good sign.”
Fan club in Milan
“My parents, girlfriend and sister will be there in Milan anyway,” says Snel. “I understand that friends have also bought tickets. My fan club will consist of about fifteen people. That is very nice and would have been very different four ago. In that respect, it might be better to go there now for the experience. Even if I am only there to perform.”
Snel’s preparation for the Games is far from certain. What is certain is that he will ride at the Games on Thursday, February 19. The 1500 meters will then be ridden in Milan at 4:30 PM.
