THE QUIET GIRL
Type: dramatic ✦✦✦
Director: Colm Bairead. With Catherine Clinch, Carrie Crowley, Andrew Bennett, Michael Patric
Ireland, County Waterford, early 1980s. Cáit, 10, is a silent and withdrawn child. How to blame her? She lives in a loveless house where she is perceived as a burden by sisters and parents. While waiting for a newborn to join her cheerful company, she is entrusted to the care of a cousin of her mother’s, wealthy, perhaps unhappy, and her taciturn husband.
In that home without children, but full of affection, Cáit flourishes, experiences a new way of seeing the world (beautifully photographed Irish nature), and discovers the nature of pain. From a novel by Claire Keegan, a very promising debut feature (and a young actress).
