To improve social safety, the province must illuminate cycle paths. A majority of the Provincial Council will make a proposal for this during the budget debate on Friday. According to the parties, many provincial cycle paths are remote and often unlit. So that needs to change, they think.
The proposal is made by a broad majority of PvdA, GroenLinks, SP, D66, VVD, Volt, Lokaal Brabant, CDA and BBB. These parties believe that unlit, remote cycle paths make cyclists feel unsafe, forcing them to take a detour.
“We are not deaf to people who say they do not feel safe,” says initiator Ward Deckers (PvdA). “We have recently been confronted with the facts by the stories we have heard. As a province, we can do something about this.”
As soon as the motion is adopted, the council must make an inventory of provincial cycle paths where safety is at risk due to a lack of lighting. From now on, social safety must be explicitly taken into account when considering whether to install lighting on a cycle path.
