The province will ask the cabinet to preserve deer camps

The province of Drenthe will urge the House of Representatives to take another look at the decision to remove fallow deer from the exemption list of pets and hobby animals. The Provincial Council decided this evening after voting on a motion from the VVD to preserve deer parks.

Deer camps may no longer add new fallow deer to their animal stock from 1 January next year. Existing deer camps may still keep fallow deer until they die. Breeding with deer is also no longer allowed.

The motion was submitted by VVD and co-signed by Sterk Lokaal, PVV, JA21, FVD and CDA. Partly because half of the PvdA voted in favor of the motion, a majority was reached.

Whether insisting on a revision will help remains to be seen. Minister Piet Adema of Agriculture finds sufficient support in the House of Representatives to ban fallow deer in deer camps.

There are several dozen deer camps in our province. The oldest comes from Assen and has been there since 1814.
