A study involving 4,656 adults over the age of 60 in Colombia shows clear links. Men with a grip strength below 27 kilograms had a 12.2% risk of cognitive impairment, while for women, the threshold was 16 kilograms, correlating to a 14.2% risk. The probability of developing dementia in this group was 4.9% for men and 6.6% for women.
Grip strength serves as a marker for muscle quality and the transmission of signals through so-called myokines. Data from the UK Biobank, which includes over 500,000 participants, confirms that weak grip strength is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular, respiratory, and cancer-related diseases. According to the NAKO Health Study, grip strength increases until around the age of 40, after which it continuously declines.
Each Additional Kilogram Reduces Mortality Risk
Long-term studies underscore the predictive significance of muscle strength. A study published in the journal JAMA tracked 5,000 women aged 63 to 99 over eight years. The results indicated that for every additional seven kilograms of grip strength, the mortality rate dropped by 12%.
Another investigation in The Lancet, involving around 140,000 adults from 17 countries, reached similar conclusions. A five-kilogram decrease in grip strength raised the mortality risk by 16%.

The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes the importance of physical activity in dementia prevention, as stated in their guidelines from July 2026. Just 3,000 steps daily can slow the spread of pathological proteins in the brain. Aiming for 5,000 to 7,500 steps can enhance these effects. It is also recommended to engage in 150 to 300 minutes of moderate exercise weekly, alongside 40 to 60 minutes of targeted strength training.
In addition to exercise, nutrition and medication play crucial roles:
- Nutrition: An anti-inflammatory diet can reduce dementia risk by 29% (JAMA Network Open, June 2026). The so-called MIND diet is associated with a risk reduction of up to 40%.
- Medication: Studies from July 2026 suggest that SGLT2 inhibitors may lower Alzheimer’s risk by 43%, while GLP-1 agonists may reduce it by 33%.
- Research: In the Phase III study PrevenTRON, the effects of the compound Trontinemab are currently being investigated in 1,600 asymptomatic individuals.
Experts also stress the importance of vascular health. A blood pressure reading below 130/80 mmHg and an LDL cholesterol level below 70 mg/dl are crucial for maintaining cognitive function over the long term.
