The Protégéthe plot of the movie

Anna (Maggie Q) is a professional killer trained by the old Moody (Samuel L. Jackson), a hitman who “recovered” her in 1991, inside a closet, at the end of a massacre in her hometown in Vietnam. After transforming her into an efficient killer, he moves with her to London and Anna, so as not to reveal her true profession, manages a bookshop of ancient texts.

One day Michael Rembrandt (Michael Keaton) shows up in the shop, asking for a first edition of a book of poems. An interest seems to be growing between the two. A few days later, however, some people close to Anna are killed and his bookshop is ransacked by some armed men. Rushing to Moody’s house, he discovers that he has been killed: this triggers the need for revenge.

Thinking that the instigator of Moody’s killing the girl is from Vietnam returns to his home country. He suspects a man, Lucas Hayes. Through his friend Billy Boy he manages to access the building where Duquet, Hayes’ henchman, is staying. He has a firefight at the end of which she is arrested, ends up in prison and is tortured from Duquet. She was freed by Michael, a man from Hayes secretly in love with her: Anna he lets himself go to passion but too many mysteries loom. And maybe Moody is still alive.

An action film tinged with romance

Expertly directed by Martin Campbellformer director of GoldenEye with Pierce Brosnan in the role of James Bond, and created by the same producers of the saga John Wickthe film is a conventional work but not without surprises. Thanks to a clever and brilliant screenplay, this action with an ancient flavor certainly does not reinvent the codes of the genre but, with intelligence, relies on a few clichés to tell an enjoyable and tense story until the last scenes.

In fact, despite the poor psychological introspection of the characters, The Protégé plays its cards well by mixing romance and action in the right doses without boring. Relying on a complex plot but easy to read. And being able to count on the two main actors, Maggie Q and Michael Keaton, for the melody touch.

And especially the choice of the protagonist makes the difference. Maggie Q has the charisma and vulnerability which are used to interpret the ruthless Anna. Her lithe body and athletic physicality make her perfect for a role full, literally, of somersaults. With Michael Keaton brings to life a rare alchemy, iwhere the sexual tension is palpable from the first meeting.
