The PP entrusts itself to Feijóo to recover morale and stop Vox

The popular meet this Friday and Saturday in Seville to elect Alberto Nunez Feijoo as president of the party after the precipitous fall of Pablo Casado due to his confrontation with Isabel Díaz Ayuso. The future leader of the PP (Ourense, 60 years old) arrives at that position with a double mission: to restore the morale of the conservatives, so that they feel that they can return to Moncloa, and stop vox. The obsession of the new leader, according to sources from his team, is that voters see the PP again as alternative government and, for that, the leaders themselves must first believe it, they point out.

Senior officials and militants from all over Spain will acclaim the man of the four absolute majorities, the politician with a reputation for being moderate, the Galician they trust to win the central Executive after the next general election. Feijóo, also president of the Xunta, will be elected by acclamation, without any internal doubt that he is the best to activate a PP that has been losing electoral space to Vox by leaps and bounds in most of the autonomies. Among the exceptions is Galiciawhere the popular leader has managed to prevent the entry of the extreme right.

Feijóo is obsessed with citizens seeing the PP again as an alternative government

The party is in a woe with Feijóo by discretion and secrecy of which he boasts. “In 13 years the name of any Xunta councilor has never been leaked,” one of his collaborators who is already looking for a house in Madrid boasted these days ago. And so these days have passed: with questions crossed between journalists and politicians and few certainties, if any. The conservatives arrive in Seville with only one name on the table that the Galician politician wanted to reveal this Thursday on Twitter: Cuca Gamarra will be his secretary general, number two of the PP.

The most relevant positions

The current party spokesperson in the Congress of the Deputies (Logroño, 47 years old) has also been general coordinator of the popular ones for four weeks. Feijóo chose her, with the approval of the barons, to take the reins of the formation after the decomposition of Casado’s leadership and the resignation of his secretary general, Teodoro Garcia Egea.

Senior officials hope to end the weekend knowing who will be the deputy secretaries of the steering committee, who will accompany Feijóo and Gamarra at the controls of the ship. The deputy has been in charge of releasing the face to face of Wednesdays with Pedro Sánchez in Congress during this last month, after Casado’s farewell. In the next few days it will be confirmed if he continues with that assignment and if another deputy will be in charge of the spokesperson for the parliamentary group.

The importance of Brussels

Feijóo will also be able to make it clear in the Andalusian city if Javier Marotto will continue as spokesman in the Senate and Dolores Montserrat, in the European Parliament. This last one is the one that has it more difficult since the moment in which Esteban González Pons, an MEP like her, was elected president of the organizing committee of the extraordinary congress. Pons is called to play an important role, since, in 2018, he was going to be the general secretary of the Galician leader, as revealed by the journalist Fran Balado in his book ‘El viaje de Feijóo’.

The conclave includes a tribute to Aznar and the refoundation of 1990

Now, in these four years, the MEP has made a career in the European Parliament and, with the relevance that Brussels policies have in the day-to-day life of citizens, he can become a strong supporter of Feijóo from there. Pons lost visibility in 2019, when she stopped being the spokesperson in the European capital by order of Casado and Montserrat began to be.

Married Farewell Speech

The conservatives celebrate their XX congress in Seville to give prominence to the president of the Andalusian Government, Juanma Moreno, who will go to the polls this year, and also to celebrate the famous conclave for the refoundation of the old Popular Alliance of 1990. At that summit, Manuel Fraga handed over the baton to José María Aznar and made it clear that he was giving him all the power of the new PP when he said that famous phrase of “neither guardianships nor ‘tutías”. Aznar will be honored and will speak this Friday at the congress, where Mariano will also speak Rajoy, with whom Feijóo has talked these weeks to make the dome, and Casado. The still president of the PP will say goodbye and announce if he will keep the seat.

After these interventions, Feijóo, as stated in the statutes, will propose two lists of names to his colleagues: 35 for the national executive committee and 30 for the national Board Of Directors, in which it will be seen how he wanted to have the faithful of the barons of all the territories. In the absence of knowing which deputy secretaries he chooses (they do not have to be included in those lists), it will be time to see what winks he makes, for example, to Ayuso, a key person in the vertiginous end of the Casado stage, or to Moreno.

On Saturday morning, the compromisarios (representatives of the affiliates) will vote and at noon the foreseeable result will be given, which will continue with the closing speech of the winner and the PP will officially open a new stage.
